case

Client: A 89-year-old Republic of Korea (ROK) veteran who served alongside U.S. forces during the Korean War and later settled in Okinawa, Japan. He faced sudden financial crisis after his monthly disability benefits were delayed, leaving him unable to pay rent and cover essential medical expenses for his chronic service-connected back injury. With limited Japanese language skills and no local family support, he risked homelessness and disruptions to his medical care.

AVWP Intervention: David S. Park, our Financial Assistance & Case Management Director, led the response—first providing emergency financial grants to cover rent and medical bills, ensuring the veteran’s immediate stability. Our team assigned a bilingual case manager (fluent in Korean and Japanese) to assist him with navigating local bureaucracy, submitting paperwork to resolve the benefits delay, and accessing long-term financial planning resources. We also collaborated with local Japanese veteran organizations to secure ongoing housing support and connect him with a low-cost medical clinic specializing in veteran care.

Outcome: The veteran’s disability benefits were reinstated within 6 weeks, and he avoided homelessness. With AVWP’s case management support, he established a monthly budget, enrolled in a low-income housing program, and secured consistent medical care for his injury. He now maintains regular contact with his case manager and participates in local veteran community events, reducing his isolation. This case demonstrates our commitment to dignified financial assistance and personalized case coordination, ensuring veterans across the Indo-Pacific have access to critical support regardless of language or location.
